CODAF JOINS FUPRE TO CELEBRATE WORLD RENEWABLE ENERGY DAY

Environment Renewable Energy Clean Energy

INTRODUCTION

According to the UN, the "World Renewable Energy Day" is celebrated on January 26th, 2025 as the "International Day of Clean Energy", marking a day to raise awareness and mobilize action for a just and inclusive transition to clean energy sources.

Renewable energy adoption in the electricity, heat, and transportation sectors is a key facilitator of keeping average world temperature rise below 1.5°C. In the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 scenario, renewables enable nearly full decarbonization of electrical generation. Meanwhile, renewable fuels and renewable heat help to reduce emissions in transportation, buildings, and industry. Building on the already substantial contribution of hydropower, the electrical industry continues to be the most promising area for renewable energy because to the robust rise of solar photovoltaic and wind in recent years. However, electricity only makes about 5% of the world's energy use, thus increasing the use of renewable energy sources for heating and transportation is still essential to the energy transition.
When compared to fossil fuels, renewable energy sources emit far fewer emissions throughout the course of their lifetime. They have little to no effect on greenhouse gas emissions and air quality while they are in operation. To address hazardous emissions and air pollution, the most effective and urgent solution is to replace the present fossil fuel-based energy system with one based on renewables.

Why is the world renewable energy day important?

A number of global concerns, including growing climate change, soaring fossil fuel costs, financial instability, health effects, and an urgent energy crisis, have fueled the move to renewable energy. The primary force behind the energy transition to a carbon-neutral economy and energy is renewable energy. Almost every nation in the world has made the fight against climate change a global priority, pledging to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 compared to 2010 emissions and to prevent the planet's average temperature from rising by 2°C, over pre-industrial levels. By 2050, Europe wants to have zero emissions of dangerous gases.

The purpose of World Renewable Energy Day is to highlight the environmental, economic, and social benefits of renewable energy, such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the creation of green jobs, and the promotion of energy independence. It also serves as a reminder to governments, industries, and individuals to take action toward a cleaner energy future.

Why is CODAF promoting renewable energy training for young people?

One of CODAF’s strong thematic is environmental protection. By investing in renewable energy education, CODAF not only promotes environmental protection but also empowers the next generation to lead the transition to a cleaner, greener Nigeria. We strongly believe in the vision of “Just transition”. Nigeria has environmental difficulties including deforestation, air pollution, and oil spills. Training young people in renewable energy empowers them to design sustainable solutions that minimize reliance on fossil fuels and limit environmental harm. Our objective is to simply convert to renewable energy.

Why we contributed to the practical demonstration of renewable energy training for FUPRE students during the 2025 world renewable energy training.

As an organization, we believe that to drive the concept of “just energy transition”, the scientific community needs to be involved, hence CODAF in collaboration with Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) is committed to breeding young scholars who will help promote the concept of a Just energy transition. Young scientist needs to understand the impact of fossil emission and the extractive sector on climate change, and hence, make contributions to renewable energy initiatives.

WHAT'S CODAF

CODAF also known as Rural Community Empowerment Initiative (RUCEi) works to bridge the communication gap between policy makers and the grassroots AND raise awareness of rural dwellers and empowering them to be active players in environmental decision making.

This mandate is anchored on article 24 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights which states that “All peoples shall have the right to a general satisfactory environment favourable to their development

OurGoal

To engage in intervention projects that builds the capacity and empowers rural community people to defend their collective rights to participating in natural resource governance through a right-based approach

OurMission

To engage in intervention projects that builds the capacity and empowers rural community people to defend their collective rights to participating in natural resource governance through a right-based approach

OurVision

We envision a self-sufficient community in the management of their environment and resources without any form of marginalization.
